Great article, as always. In my humble opinion, humans, as a predatory species, have an inherent potential for aggression. In our modern world this is viewed as something to be afraid of, to be avoided, yet, it is what drives us. Not living that potential leads to violence against oneself (like mental disorders) or against others (a mental disorder as well). Martial Arts provide a safe playground for our aggressive urges, for any gender. I'm not talking about martial sports, which have their own issues, like the competitive character. I'm talking about ART, fighting as a game, as an outlet. As a quite small man, I experienced bullying and harassment as well and learned, most of them leave you alone as soon as you make it clear you're prepared to fight, to hurt and get hurt, the latter being something most of the bullies never really experienced. I think with proper martial education, hand to hand without competition, from a young age, we could decrease day to day violence, but as long as we're in a societal system, you call it patriarchy, that teaches us to view others as objects, that won't happen. Until then we need people like you to show the bullies that nobody is anybody's object for whatever. I do my part by teaching Capoeira in Kindergarten, the martial art with a nearly 50/50 ratio of women and men (and her own issues with machismo). Thank you for your work.
